Relix Review

Relix - Sept 2015

It almost sounds like a joke:
What do you get when you cross a steelpan composer, a virtuoso bassist and a monster powerhouse of a drummer? The answer, of course, is Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, but there isn't anything funny about that, save for the fact that the band is a trio. On their sophomore release for Ropeadope, JSF delivers a long-form tribute to their friend Roy “Futureman” Wooten, of Flecktones fame, that explores theme and variation over the course of six tracks, plus a “Desert” encore. This is clearly jazz — and each member demonstrates their considerable chops—but at the core, it is also a composer’s record. As such, it’s made that much more impressive through its incorporation of Western classical concepts and structures. Though short, the album is thoroughly satisfying. (Wayan Zoey)
